Our ‘New 1st Year Pupils’ Visit WHS

Over three days this week we have been delighted to welcome children from our feeder primary schools as part of our new, extended, transition programme.

Primary 7 pupils from Noss, Newton Park and our associated rural schools (Watten, Keiss, Canisbay, Bower, Thrumster, Dunbeath and Lybster Primaries) came to the school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday respectively to meet with members of the Senior Management, Pupil Support and Guidance teams as well as having the chance to hear from Faculty Heads about the subjects that they will experience when they become pupils of Wick High School.

The youngsters were given a short presentation in the main hall about what to expect from S1 before having their morning breaktime in the school’s canteen. Then, accompanied by staff and members of the school’s Pupil Council, they set off on a short tour of each of the school’s faculties. Mr Ellis played some Maths games based on playing cards; Ms Macarthur discussed reading programmes and genre studies in English; Mrs Laybourne gathered feedback on what the children would like to learn in Social Subjects next year; Mr Sandecki toured the children around our superb sporting, music and home economics facilities; Mr Ross displayed the beautiful artwork and models of his faculty and Mr Shand sent the pupils out with a bang, literally, with his superb fireworks display in Science.

It was great to meet our new S1 cohort and to get to know them before they come to the school on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th June for their timetabled, full, transition days.
