Mathematics

Mathematics is essential in every walk of life: whether you are redecorating your bathroom, applying for a credit card or deciding whether the pair of shoes that are in the sale are actually the bargain of the year or not!

The department aims to develop confidence, interest and enjoyment in mathematics. We use a variety of up-to-date teaching methods and resources, including but not exclusively Google Classroom, to engage pupils and relate their mathematical knowledge to everyday life around them.  We are a very approachable department and depend on good communication links with pupils, parents and staff to allow our pupils’ hard work to be worthwhile and their achievements celebrated.

The Maths department at Wick High offers a broad general education throughout the first 3 years of High school.  The pupils have an opportunity to learn a wide range of knowledge and skills from many topics including Numeracy.  Our aim is to lay a secure foundation for meeting the examination courses that follow from S4-S6.  As a result, it is highly recommended that all pupils purchase their own scientific calculator.

From years S4-6, the pupils have an opportunity to gain SQA-approved National Qualification in Mathematics.  In National 4, pupils learn the ability to use their mathematical skills in a variety of real-life situations.  In National 5, pupils learn how to apply mathematical techniques in a variety of mathematical situations.  At a Higher level, pupils learn how to manage, interpret and communicate information in a more complex mathematical form.  The department also offers an Advanced Higher course in S6 for the pupil who wants to challenge themselves further.

More information on these courses is available from the SQA Mathematics homepage Mathematics – SQA
