Wick High Achieves Silver LGBT Charter Status

We were delighted to be informed by LGBT Youth Scotland last month that Wick High School had successfully achieved Silver Charter status. To achieve this award the school had to do a variety of work to ensure LGBT members of our community feel safe, supported and included.
The school was praised for its inclusive policies and visibility within the school.
As part of our Charter journey, members of our LGBTQIA+ Equalities Group worked hard to achieve several different outcomes. These included:
- The creation of a Gender Neutral Language Guide for all staff;
- Consultation on the school’s Anti-Bullying and Dress Code policies;
- Support with P7 transition with visits to Newton Park Primary School to discuss inclusion at WHS.
- Running an information stall and bake sale during Pride Month to raise money for LGBT Youth Scotland.
Staff took part in LGBT Awareness Training and developed curricular resources that included examples of LGBT representation and awareness.
To celebrate this incredible achievement, the LGBTQIA+ Equalities Group had a party during their weekly meet-up.
Miss Ker, the co-ordinator of the project, explained that the school will now focus on achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award to ensure that all members of our school community are as safe and included as possible.
