WHS U15s narrowly lose out to Nicolson Institute

Our Under 15 football team were drawn away to The Nicolson Institute, Stornoway, on Tuesday of this week in The North of Scotland Cup.
After a lengthy mini-bus and ferry trip to The Western Isles the lads sadly were pipped 3-2 by an excellent Nicolson side who are also the reigning North of Scotland Cup holders.
The game started brightly in reflection of the fine weather but fortune was not in Wick’s favour in the first half as the home team raced to a 2-0 half time scoreline. The lads, roused, we are sure, by a stirring half time team talk from their manager Mr Mackintosh, rallied back through goals from Grant Aitkenhead with a tap in and Ben Sinclair with a rasping free kick.
Despite Wick pushing hard at the end of the game a third goal wouldn’t come even when Ross Gunn attempted to bring a moment of magic to the affair with a memorable back-to-goal volley which went agonisingly close. The boys’ hearts were broken when, late in the game, Nicolson were awarded a controversial (aren’t they always at these points?!) penalty which was duly converted to secure the islanders a heard-earned victory.
Congratulations and good luck to Nicolson in their next round tie and well done to all the lads who represented our school so well – we are very proud of your efforts. We look forward to their next game; a local derby against Thurso High School set to be played on Tuesday.
