Art and Design BGE
S1
The coursework for S1 provides a broad general introduction to the expressive arts and principles of design. An important part of the coursework is the study of the visual elements which involves the recognition and application of line, texture, tone, colour theory, form, and drawing methods such as construction and perspective drawing. Throughout the year pupils have been introduced to the work of various artists and designers, whilst combining a variety of media and 3D work to give opportunities for self-expression and creativity.
S2
Following on from S1, the S2 coursework continues to provide a broad general education in both the expressive arts and principles of design. Pupils are introduced to portraiture and a variety of drawing techniques. This is followed by a timely 3-D design project based around Christmas. The design process aims to give pupils the opportunity to work creatively towards a design brief and to become familiar with media and the construction processes used further up the school. Pupils are also introduced to textile design and print making followed by skills busting, media handling techniques and a review of the visual elements. Throughout the year pupils are given the chance to appreciate the work of artists and designers for critical analysis. This course is designed to prepare S2 pupils to be ready to take on the National awards in S3.
Art and Design National 4/5
S3 and S4
This course is practical and experimental where the key focus is creativity. The course encourages learners to experiment with art and design materials, be imaginative, creative; think critically; and apply practical skills in response to art and design activities.
The design activity requires candidates to develop practical skills in managing a range of materials and mediums in researching and developing creative solutions to a design brief.
The expressive activity requires candidates to research and develop their personal thoughts in response to stimuli. Pupils will produce observational drawings, compositional studies which lead up to the final solution in response to an individual theme.
The National 4 qualification comprises 2-unit assessments, one design and one in expressive showing knowledge of expressive artists and designers and their practise.
An Added Value Unit at National 4, in expressive and design requires learners to extend and apply skills learned during the course. This will consist of one expressive art piece and one piece of design work. These activities are open and flexible to allow for personalisation and choice, whilst focusing on the process and the products of learning.
Coursework Overview
Unit 1 – Expressive activity
Unit 2 – Design activity
Added value unit – Expressive final solution.
Added Value Unit – Design final solution.
National 5
S4
This course continues to provide a broad practical experience of art and design and related critical activities created to inspire pupils’ imagination, and resourcefulness in applying practical solutions to design and expressive activities.
Pupils will further develop their knowledge of art and design practice by studying artists and designers and their work. Pupils will further develop their understanding of expressive and design processes and accumulate and use a selection of related skills. This course provides opportunities for candidates to be inspired and creatively challenged through their work.
The course comprises one expressive portfolio demonstrating progress in researching a theme of personal choice. This includes single observational studies/drawings in a variety of media, developing compositional studies and resolving a final piece of artwork. The design portfolio also comprises research, development of design ideas and materials and a 3D final Solution.
Pupils are required to sit a critical examination where they will be required to draw upon their knowledge of artists and designers and use their critical thinking skills in analysing the works of designers and artists.
Coursework Overview
Question paper – 50 marks
Expressive portfolio – 100 marks
Design portfolio – 100 marks
Higher
S4,5,6
Candidates further develop knowledge of art and design practice by studying artists and designers and their work. They develop an understanding of expressive art and design processes and gain related skills. This course provides opportunities for candidates to be inspired and creatively challenged as they communicate their thoughts and feelings, through their work. The course provides opportunities for candidates to extend and consolidate their skills in art and design.
This course is learner centred and includes investigative and practical learning opportunities. This qualification is accessible to the needs and aspirations of a diverse range of candidates.
The Higher course work comprises an expressive and design activity and a critical/theory exam. Candidates will develop a range of art and design techniques and complex problem-solving skills.
In the expressive activity candidates will develop knowledge and understanding of artists’ practices and the social, cultural, and other influences affecting their work and practise. They are required to produce analytical drawings, studies, and investigative research to produce a single line of development towards a final piece of artwork. Candidates will reflect on and evaluation their creativeness and visual qualities of their artwork.
In the design activity candidates will develop their knowledge and understanding of designers’ working practices and the social, cultural, and other influencing factors. Candidates will respond to a design brief and will compile a variety of 2D and 3D investigative material and research to produce a single line of development and a design solution.
Candidates will be required to sit a critical/theory examination which comprises of a design section and expressive section. Candidates will be required to draw upon their knowledge of artists and designers and use their critical thinking skills in analysing the works of designers and artists.

Advanced Higher Expressive Art
S5/6
Candidates research expressive art contexts related to their own themes or stimulus. They learn about expressive art practice by investigating how artists respond creatively to themes. They will explore how artists integrate visual stimuli and other information from a variety of sources.
The course combines investigative and practical learning with knowledge and understanding of expressive practice. Candidates will follow a creative process in developing expressive art ideas to resolve and realise artworks influenced by their investigation. Candidates will produce a contextual analysis of a selected artwork by discussing related contexts and analysing the impact of that artist’s work. Candidates will reflect on and evaluate their creative decisions and artwork.
Coursework Overview
Section 1 – practical expressive artwork 64 marks
Section 2 – contextual analysis 30 marks
Section 3 – evaluation 6 marks
